Treaty 9 photographs from northern Ontario
We’re excited to launch a new initiative: Finding Kin. We will be focusing on photographs taken during the signing of Treaty 9 in Northern Ontario. The photos will roughly follow the route of the signings (map: https://www.archives.gov.on.ca/en/explore/online/jamesbaytreaty/docs/TRW_JBT_Exhibit_Map.pdf).
The initiative helps identify Indigenous individuals in collection photographs. In the past, their photos were often taken without recording their identities. Project Naming (Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/project.naming/) aims to enrich our collection with accurate information of individual identities to provide a more complete, and respectful picture of the past. You can help by sharing our posts with anyone who may have knowledge of people living in these areas from 1905–1906.
